An Analysis of Depictive Secondary Predicates in German without Discontinuous Constituents

چکیده

In Müller, To Appear 2005b I provide evidence that suggests that linearization approaches or approaches that assume flat structures cannot account for the German clause structure in an insightful way. Analyses that make use of discontinuous constituents should therefore be revised. In this paper I develop an analysis of German depictive secondary predicates that differs from the one suggested in Müller, 2002 by assuming binary branching structures, verb movment, and continuous constituents instead of a linearization approach. Some shortcomings of previous analyses are pointed out and it is shown how linearization constraints regarding depictive predicate and antecedent can be modeled.

An HPSG Analysis of German Depictive Secondary Predicates

I will provide German data that shows that depicitve secondary predicates may refer to subjects, direct objects, indirect objects, and even more oblique complements. Reference to more oblique arguments is more marked. The markedness corresponds to the obliqueness hierarchy that was proposed by Keenan and Comrie [13] and others. Based on these observations I will suggest analyzing depictive seco...

Parsing String Generating Hypergraph Grammars

A string generating hypergraph grammar is a hyperedge replacement grammar where the resulting language consists of string graphs i.e. hypergraphs modeling strings. With the help of these grammars, string languages like anbncn can be modeled that can not be generated by context-free grammars for strings. They are well suited to model discontinuous constituents in natural languages, i.e. constitu...

Continuous or Discontinuous Constituents?

Reape (1991) notes that it is possible to develop grammars based on the concept of discontinuous constituents which span every subset of an input string. The complexity of the paring problem for such grammars is at least exponential in both time and space. As Reape (1991, p. 62) has argued for the processing of grammars with discontinuous constituents and as Carroll (1994) has demonstrated for ...

Constraints on Resultative and Depictive Modification

According to Halliday (1967), there is a ban on simultaneous resultative and depictive modification in English. It is here observed that such a ban is not general, but instead restricted to certain examples of modification with abnormal theta relations, which are commonly found in the resultative construction. Otherwise, simultaneous resultative/depictive modification is possible. An account of...

Discosuite - A parser test suite for German discontinuous structures

Parser evaluation traditionally relies on evaluation metrics which deliver a single aggregate score over all sentences in the parser output, such as PARSEVAL. However, for the evaluation of parser performance concerning a particular phenomenon, a test suite of sentences is needed in which this phenomenon has been identified. In recent years, the parsing of discontinuous structures has received ...
